Children visited their parents on the 28th November 2013 .We were able to take a total of 61 children to visit their parents in three different prisons. 44 children visited Luzira Upper Prison, 13 children visited Luzira Women Prison and 4 children visited Nakasongola Prison and these were escorted by a team of 7 volunteers. 3 of them where social workers, 3 teachers and 1 matron.
During visits facilitated by Wells of Hope, Children are able to have direct contact with their parents in prison. And this has a life changing impact on the child. We are to facilitate three visits a year.
The permission for this particular visit, which was the last one in this year did not come easy characterized by two postponements because of some changes in the security at the maximum prison. When we confirmed that we were going, they were all extremely happy and excited because it’s a day to share with their lovely parents who they have missed for a long time.
The children were so excited about visiting their parents; they almost didn’t sleep that night . The children wrote letters to their parents and also asked their friends to write letters to their parents. While on the way, the children sung songs of praise and victory in the bus. You could see that unspeakable joy on these little faces.
During the visit ,Both the children and parents had an incredible time together as they spent over three hours of serious synergy .The parents went through the children’s end of term exams with the help of the teachers and they realized their children’s progress in class due to the high marks attained by pupils . The parents in prison appreciated the work by Wells of Hope in endeavoring to accord their children a quality education.
The parents also used this time send letters and messages to their guardians at home through their children. Through the children they are able to connect with their families in the communities, otherwise before this it was practically impossible.
They also counseled their children and encouraged them to behave well especially during the Christmas holidays. At the end of the visit all the parents prayed with the children and we departed from all prisons to go back to Wells of Hope Academy school.
