Second term’s visit was conducted on Thursday the 23rd of July 2015 in three prisons. Sixty five children visited their parents in prison. Among these, thirty six children visited Boma section and nineteen children visited Condemn section in Luzira Upper prison, three children visited their parents in Luzira Women prison and seven children visited their parents in Nakasongola prison.
The children were guided to the visiting area where their parents were waiting for them. Upon the arrival, inmates welcomed their children with hugs and kisses while others were carried by their parents to show how they loved and missed them. One inmate from Condemn section said ``I was bedridden but when I was told that my child was coming to visit, I gathered all my strength not to miss this day because it really means a lot to me and my child’’. The room was filled with smiles and laughter as the parents interacted with their children to find out what was happening in their lives.
In Boma section, five children were visiting their parents in prison for the first time. The children were excited although they could not recall what their parents looked like. The parents were happy and could not believe that they were seeing their children after a long time. Simon Peter one of the inmates said “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw my child because I thought it was a joke when I was filling the forms in 2014. I only got to believe it on 22nd July 2015 when one of the inmates informed me about the visit, I didn’t know that Samalie had joined the Academy and I didn’t know how she looked like, I last saw her when she was 3yrs old, now it’s been 2yrs without seeing her. Samalie too could not recognize her dad.
While in Women prison two sisters visited their sister (who stays at the Prison daycare) for the first time. They had never visited her in such a long time. The siblings had a great time.
In Nakasongola we were informed that the prison was split up into two that is, women prison and men prison; and both prisons were visited. In the men prison, two children visited their father. The children and staff were welcomed by the Deputy Officer in Charge whose office acted as the waiting room. John Bosco, the children’s father was summoned; and on seeing his children, John Bosco was overjoyed and they all warmly hugged one another with smiles on their faces. In the women prison, the children and staff were welcomed by Stella, the Deputy Officer in Charge for Women Prison. Given that the separation of Nakasongola Prison into Men and Women prisons is still a new development, the women prison lacks a waiting room; a tree shade acted as the waiting area and the mothers of the children were summoned. As soon as the mothers and the children saw one another, they ran towards each other with overwhelming joy which was shown by the smiles on their faces as they deeply hugged each other. Bonny, an inmate on long-term exclaimed, “Wow! All the children look healthy and have really grown up so fast!”
The parents greeted the volunteers and could not help thanking them for taking care of their children and for showing up early on such an important day in their lives. The inmates and the WOH volunteers had a prayer thanking God for the visit and they later shared a sumptuous meal; it was such a joy to see children bonding with their parents. WOH volunteers after reviewed the children’s results with the inmates; and they were very happy to see that their children are good performers and to also hear that they are God-fearing and disciplined.
The parents advised and encouraged their children to study hard, respect their elders and keep good conduct. They also prayed with their children. The parents appreciated the new uniforms that the children wore and thanked Wells of Hope for supporting their children.
The children there after received food staff and scholastic materials from their parents, we had a closing prayer and then both inmates and children said farewell to each other.
We thank our friends and Partners In Hope (PIH) USA for fundraising and funding the Children's prison visit.
