The counseling session covered two topics; children’s visit to prison and encouraging open communication between the counselors and the children.
In preparation for the prison visit, the children got to know about the date of the visit and the need for smartness. They were asked what they liked about the last prison visit and what can be done to better the visit this time. They reported being given more time, the food, encouraging words from the parents as the positives and requested this visit to cut cake, have soda, more time and one of them suggested that they should have a Christmas party in prison with their parents.
From the counselors point of view sharing with their parent in prison is not bad but given that they are not in position to do much about the situation, the children should not feel helpless. This is directed towards helping them to concentrate better in their school work, or get on better with their friends and family.
The session was facilitated by Mrs. Ssuubi Ellen Eva and Ms Rose J Kadhuba, the school counselors.
