There had never been a thing like this in the lives of these precious ones. It was such a wonderful moment for these children. Wells of Hope held the very first camp for Children of prisoners from the 22nd to 24th August 2008. This camp took place in a serene place at Children welfare Mission Namugongo. These children were coming from different places of Uganda to include Mbale, Pallisa, Jinja, Mukono, Kampala and Soroti. For most of these children, it was the first time they were coming to Kampala, they had no shoes and some of them didn’t even have clothes. As a matter of fact they came in their school uniform. It was so a shaming to know of two sisters who were sharing a panty, they put it on in turns.
.We were offering the children psycho-social support which included counseling, sensitizing these little angels on issues to do with HIV/AIDS and a few issues like sexuality, their education and hygiene. We also taught them about Christianity and some of them gave their lives to Christ. This was aimed at reducing on their vulnerability. We had ample time to pray for them, encourage them, play with them and above all love them. Most of these children confessed that they had not experienced such love .we did all it took to be uncomfortable to ensure that these children got the best of their stay with us. They slept in comfortable beds, played, watched movies and they were also taught. This was an opportunity for us to get to know our children better and cement our relationship with them.
We offered free medical care, where we had doctors do a check up and also offer medication. Some of the children had jiggers both on the feet and hands but we had them treated and also de wormed them. Most of them actually had blown stomachs. We gave them the best of meals but unfortunately some of them got running stomachs because they were probably not used to that kind of food and they over ate because the food was extremely nice. They just could not help but eat and eat.
These children gained their self esteem and were able to identify with others. They also got to know that there are people who care about them .we were able to buy shoes for those who didn’t have and also gave all the girls new panties. By the end of the camp, none of the children wanted to go back to their homes. In fact some of them cried as we took them back to their homes.
Every day we are thanking God for the opportunity that he has given us to be used to take lives of children of prisoners to another level that with out help would be placed to pay for crimes of their parents.
