Enyunyuzi
The name of the choir “Enyunyuzi” is a runyakitara word from Western Uganda meaning “Stars." Mrs. Ssuubi Ellen hails from Western Uganda and she came up with that name because she had seen how emotionally (and at times physically) wounded the children of prisoners are; and those wounds turn into “Scars.”
But when they come to Wells of Hope, the children get hope and their wounds are turned into “STARS” so they are “BRIGHT STARS”/ “ENYUNYUZI.”
When it was started, Wells of Hope Children’s Choir (Enyunyuzi Children’s Choir) was started way back in 2008 when we were still paying school fees for the children from their homes; where we would facilitate the children’s transport to bring them from their various homes.
In 2010 when we opened the school with a boarding section, we were able to record that music. We so far have one album and we are to record another one very soon.
Aim of the choir
The aim of this choir is to help the children realize their potential and talents in music, dance and drama just like all other children in other schools. The children are brought to Wells of Hope when they are so timid and stigmatized by the communities they come from because of what their parent did. At Wells of Hope Junior School, we train them to be able to realize their different talent which brings out the beauty of the child. Through singing, dancing and poetry, they are able to express their plight, be bold and gain confidence.
What they do
They are able to sing, they dance different local dances here in Uganda, they play musical instruments, they recite poems, they compose their own songs and poems and they praise and worship the LORD during the Sunday service at school. They entertain visitors who come to the school. Their self confidence and self esteem has been boosted.
The different albums they have
They have so far done one album with five songs, one of the songs “NKENYUNYUZI”,”LIKE A STAR”, they sang with Ellen Ssuubi. They have done a video recording for 3 of their songs. There is need for funding video recordings for the rest of the their songs.
Its transitions (from when it was started to date)
At the beginning we collected these children from their homes and we trained them, later when the boarding section was opened we had a fully fledged choir and it was easier training them and that is how we managed to record them, we had 14 children record the first album. That time the rest of the children were quite shy, but now they are all interested in singing and dancing.
The members involved
By the grace of God, Mr. Francis Ssuubi (founder) and Ms. Rachel Mirembe composed and wrote the first songs on our first album and the very first tracks of the songs were done by Emmanuel Ceasar Simwende. Mrs. Ellen Eva Ssuubi trained the children with Ms. Maria Kisakye and they harmonized and recorded the songs with the children in 2011. The children’s songs were recorded by Mr. Walusimbi Fred of First Love Studio in Ntinda.
