HIDDEN
TREASURE 2007
On 15th December we had an end of year meeting with
the children and their caretakers.
The meeting comprised of activities such as:
· A presentation from the children’s choir drama group.
· An appreciation speech from the prison staff.
· Speech from the guest of honor.
· Giving out of gifts to the children.
· Giving testimonies by a grandmother, a mother and child.
· Updates from the caretakers about their families and their
expectation of the future.
· Way forward about the project.
The meeting was held on a Saturday afternoon on the premises of
a school that was rented out to us. We had 20 families in attendance
out of the 33 families; some that did not come were far off in upcountry
areas we could not contact them because of budgetary constraints.
We had visitors from the prison administration; these
were the welfare officers from Luzira women prison, Luzira upper
prison and Luzira Murchison bay prison with whom we work with to
reach the inmates. In their speech, they appreciated Wells of hope
for having worked with them to cover up the gaps in the needs of
inmates and their families.
We also had the former minister for Ethics and integrity
as Guest of Honour (Hon. Tim Lwanga) who had earlier on Launched
Wells of Hope Ministries in 2005. He was amazed about the growth
of the ministry that and the number of children and caretakers and
the education programe. He made a moving speech, one of the statements
he made was that the imprisonment of a parent affects the rich and
poor children the same way, at a time of Christmas a child of a
prisoner even though he/she is rich will feel the same way, because
the parent is not available to give him/her a Christmas gift, so
endeavors like those of wells of hope at Christmas should be applauded
and supported.
It
was a time to hear testimonies from beneficiaries one of which was
a mother of three girls who is an acid victim inflicted on her by
her husband. He was imprisoned and is serving a seven-year sentence
and is HIV+. To cut the whole story short. Wells of Hope came in
to help the family; the children are now in school. The family is
very grateful for this.
Another testimony is that of a13 year old girl called Shamim who
has been promoted to primary seven, she has two brothers, their
father was imprisoned 12 years ago, he is on death row. Shamim says
that her mother had failed to keep them fully in school. But now
wells of hope came in to help them and they were able to keep in
school this year and they are very grateful.
We had a presentation from the children; they presented
a drama about Christmas, they composed some songs about the meaning
of Christmas. The choir has helped the children to develop their
self-esteem, self-confidence, cooperation and development of talent.
The children were given Christmas gifts and were
very happy. Their was a great smile on each of their faces.
Updates from the caretakers about their families
and expectation of the future.
All
clients that attended were very grateful for the education support
given; it has had a great impact in their families. Some children
were able to be united with their mothers; some children were able
to get uniform and other scholastic materials. Above all, the children
that were abandoned by society have regained their self-esteem and
hope for a bright future. Wells of hope has bridged the gap that
the imprisoned fathers and mothers would have covered.
The clients agreed that the education support alone though it has
made big impact is not enough; they wish to be empowered farther.
They have the following needs.
General needs.
1-Low incomes/no incomes at all.
2-lack of entrepreneurship skills
3- Grandmothers and some mothers have very old houses that they
fear can collapse on them.
4-Grand mothers and some mothers have more children some who are
orphans and they are in need.
5-Poor health for grand mothers and the HIV+ children who are on
A.R.Vs
5-Raising house rent single handedly.
