SIXTY-EIGHT Luzira Prisons inmates have been admitted
to universities, including Makerere.
Fifteen students will go to the Uganda Christian
University, 27 to Makerere, 23 to Kyambogo while others will go
to Bugema.
They will study law, education, social sciences,
business administration, mass communication, tourism, social work
and social administration, human resource management and information
and communication technology.
The prisoners will study under an initiative of
the African Prison Project, the Franciscan Prisons Community,
Wells of Hope Ministries and the Prisons Schools Services programme.
The universities have accepted to start a distance
learning project at Luzira when the academic year opens later
this month.
The Prisons education coordinator, John Kagambo,
said the programme was sponsored by Barclays Bank, Uganda Telecom,
Vision for Africa, the Prison Fellowship Uganda, the Uganda Discharged
Prisoners Aid Society and AVSI Company.
“Many inmates, who have completed A’Level, are interested
in continuing with studies but most of them lack tuition fees.
We need more sponsors to enable them access tertiary education,”
he said.
