FOUR inmates of Kabasanda Prison in Mpigi district-Central
Uganda- have died of cholera, the district prisons commander has
said according Ugandan News paper reports on Friday30th December
2006.
Lawrence Buserezi yesterday said one inmate died last week on his
way home after he had finished serving his sentence.
His body was identified by residents who carried it to the prison
and later taken to Gombe mortuary.
Another inmate died on Sunday Monday 24th December 2006, while
the other two died on Monday 25th December 2006.
Sources in the prison attribute the cholera outbreak to congestion
and poor hygiene. Prison conditions in Uganda are severe and at
times life-threatening; especially in rural prisons were prisoners
face high mortality rates due to inadequate food and unsanitary
conditions. Over 58% of the inmates are pre-trial detainees who
regularly spend years in pre-trail detention on the flimsiest of
evidence, making the right to a speedy trial virtually meaningless.
“The prison is meant to accommodate 50 inmates,
but it currently houses more than 100. Inmates share plates which
were cut out of jerry cans. Due to water scarcity, the plates are
not washed,” the source said.
