Lillian says that the first time she visited her mother in prison she was seven years, but she never recognized her,the subsequent years that followed she visited her mother once every year but ,she really never could recognize her or even build a relationship with her, she says that every time she would see her she looked like a mad woman and she never developed a pictorial image in her mind of how her mother really looked like,at the end of each visit she would forget how her mother looked like(each visit would last 10-30 minutes). Everything confused her even after her grandmother narrated to her the whole story concerning her mother when she was 9 nine years. She says she cried a lot when she learnt that her mother is a prisoner. It was until the year 2010 when Wells of Hope began taking her to the prison to see her mother that she was able to connect with her mother, she is happy the visits are regular and she is given a lot of time to chat with her mother(we normally spend 2-3 hours each visit). Every time we visit the Prison with Lillian, the Prisoners and prison officers are always over excited to see Lillian because they count her as their own child, they keep saying Lillian has grown. This is because they nurtured her when she was a baby at that time she was imprisoned along with her mother.
Liillian dreads going back to her uncle’s home, she narrates with a lot of sadness how she suffered at the hands of her Uncle’s wife. She says that her uncle’s wife used to beat her and abuse her on a daily basis. The uncle’s wife would remind her most of the time that her mother is in prison and that she would be like her mother ,she would sometimes refuse her to go to school .Lillian would wash clothes ,look after her uncle’s children and do most of the chores at home . Her uncle’s wife had told her that she would never amount to anything, and that the best she would ever be in life is a “house girl”
During The holidays Lillian she does not go home, she stays at Wells of Hope .And Ever since she came to Wells of Hope she has never been visited by anyone. She mentioned to me her needs, like shoes,Vaseline, shoe polish, extra dress, sweater among others. She has many needs just like any young girl at school, it’s the challenge, though an opportunity that we are faced with here at Wells of Hope-to ensure that these children under our care get what they need to survive and also acquire quality education .
A little more about Lillian
Lillian who wants to be a nurse, is a talented girl who plays netball, she is the captain at school and the team’s shooter. She has always helped her team to win. She is in primary four, she is an average student.Lillian is a jolly girl, you can never imagine that hidden behind her gorgeous smile is this sad story. Lillian is so grateful to Wells of Hope; she is happy and says her life is better now.
Who is Lillian’s father?
Lillian has never met her father; some time back when she visited her mother in prison she was given her father telephone’s number. When I was just about to ask her that we call her father, she said that she called him once and he asked her if she was Lillian and when she answered in affirmative ,he simply greeted her and said bye, since that time they have never talked. Written on a small piece of paper is the telephone number of her father, to Lillian this is the only assurance that she has a father.
