Caregivers of Children whose parents are in prison
resolved and agreed to form a support group, this was arrived at the end
of a one day participatory evaluation workshop
The workshop took place on 21st April 2007 at better living centre .
The workshop was attended by a sample of 11 families out of the 23 families
The items on the agenda were.
• Information about wells of hope.
• Needs assessment and family status report
• Psycho-social support program.
The needs assessment in summary.
All clients that attended were very grateful for the education support
given. it made a great impact in their families. Some children were able
to be united with their mothers, children were able to get uniform and
other scholastic materials and above all, the children that were abandoned
by society have regained their self esteem and hope of a bright future.
The project has covered the gap that existed between the imprisoned parents
and their spouses .
The clients agreed that although the education support has made big impact,
they wish to be empowered further. They have the following needs.
General needs.
• Low incomes / no incomes at all.
• lack of entrepreneurship skills
• Grandmothers and some mothers have very old houses that they fear
can collapse on them.
• Grand mothers and some mothers have more children some who are
orphans and they are in need.
• Poor health for grand mothers and the HIV+ children who are on
A.R.Vs.
• Raising house rent single handedly.
WAY FORWARD
The clients resolved and agreed to start a support group for caregivers
of children of parents in prison ,so that they can educate themselves,
share information, conduct income generating activities among other objectives
that will help him addressing the problems faced by such children .Mrs
Kasirye Rehema a mother to children whose father was condemned at Jinja
Main prison and Mr. Kasolo John who is a guardian to children whose father
was condemned to die at Jinja main prison were elected to be the interim
steering team under the patronage of wells of Hope.
