VOLUNTEERS TRAINING
2007
The
volunteers training took place on the 29th of October 2007. It targeted
volunteers in and out of wells of hope ministries especially those
from churches in and out of Kampala. The response from the churches
was very low, the churches that responded and sent trainees were
Kitala Mt Lebanon church at Entebbe and Makerere Full gospel church.
However there some trainees from churches that were not contacted
that attended these are, Christian life church and Lifeline Ministries.
The churches that did not respond are Miracle center cathedral Lubaga,
Victory Christian Center Ndeeba, United Christian Center Kasubi,
Kampala Pentecostal church. To wells of hope volunteers that had
trained earlier on it was a refresher course.
The programme started with praise and worship by Emmanuel Ceaser
in charge of Music and Rachael Mirembe who coordinated the training.
We had Mr Ssuubi present an overview of what Wells of Hope is all
about; this was after watching the general Video which high lighted
the following activities.
· Education contribution to prisoner’s children.
· Provision of Psychosocial services to prisoners and the
care takers of the children.
· Provision of food supplements to HIV+ Prisoners on ARVS.
· Evangelistic visits to prisons.
The Video aimed at communicating to the trainees that the prisoner’s
needs go beyond being spiritual but physical as well.
Reverand Jim Robinnette shared from Psalms 107:10-16
The message emphasised the mercy and grace the lord shows to those
that are bound.
During the training the Participants watched a video the power
of Forgiveness (30 Minutes video). There is real hope and real forgiveness...
The back ground of this Video is such that:On February 3, 1998,
Karla Faye Tucker was put to death by the state of Texas, the first
woman to be executed in America in fifteen years.
She was a confessed pick-axe murderer. But in prison her life dramatically
changed through a religious conversion experience. This former drug-crazed
prostitute and savage killer became what many saw as a fully rehabilitated
and beautiful, loving person.
In this program one can see and decide forhim/herself.You Meet
Karla Faye Tucker. And meet others caught up in this emotionally
wrenching story. There is Ron, the brother of Deborah Thornton,
one of Karla's murder victims. He wanted to kill Karla and avenge
his sister's death. But through an incredible succession of circumstances
he became a close friend of Karla Faye's, came to forgive and love
her and advocated that her death sentence become commuted. You also
meet Deborah Thornton's widowed husband, Richard. He wanted Karla
to get what was coming to her in retribution for her heinous acts.
we were able to See why he could find no place whatsoever for even
a shred of mercy toward her.
There were a lot of lessons that the Volunteers learnt, some other
s were moved to actually change their lives, one lady was touched
to forgive the people who accused her husband falsely and he was
put in jail were he met his death. Most importantly, many developed
a new perspective toward prison ministry because what Karla became
as a result of the people who went in there to share the love of
God and also for the impact her self she created in and outside
the prison as a result of her conversion to Christianity. The volunteers
also got a training using the Good Samaritan story in their approach
toward prisoners living with HIV/Aids. It was also helpful in learning
how to handle stigma and also prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS especially
as far as crime is concerned. This was achieved through a drama
acted out by the volunteers, which is based on the story of the
Good Samaritan and also discussed in small groups. The story is
found in Luke 10:30-35
Jesus answered, "There was once a man who was going down from
Jerusalem to Jericho when robbers attacked him, stripped him, and
beat him up, leaving him half dead.
Luk 10:31 It so happened that a priest was going down that road;
but when he saw the man, he walked on by on the other side.
Luk 10:32 In the same way a Levite also came there, went over and
looked at the man, and then walked on by on the other side.
Luk 10:33 But a Samaritan who was traveling that way came upon the
man, and when he saw him, his heart was filled with pity.
Luk 10:34 He went over to him, poured oil and wine on his wounds
and bandaged them; then he put the man on his own animal and took
him to an inn, where he took care of him.
Luk 10:35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them
to the innkeeper. 'Take care of him,' he told the innkeeper, 'and
when I come back this way, I will pay you whatever else you spend
on him.' "
At the end of the training we took pictures and the participants
were very happy, they were all eager to reach out to people who
have been affected by crime especially Prisoners and their families
